A flexible, scalable tactical intervention that transforms vehicle-dominated streets into inclusive pedestrian spaces through phased deployment of hexagonal modules accommodating India's vibrant street life—vending, gathering, and movement.

Over 70% of Ahmedabad lacks pedestrian footpaths, creating unsafe conditions for a growing population. This competition entry addresses a metro station access street with minimal sidewalk space, no vehicle barriers, encroached parking, and street vending.

Concept: Modular, Flexible, Scalable

Urban Weave proposes hexagonal modules (38cm side) made from recycled plastic, assembled into temporary walkways on steel grid foundations chemically bolted to the ground. Five module types provide adaptability: standard walkway, vendor surface, tree planting openings, signage openings, and planting features. Color-coded patterns create visual interest while maintaining a minimum 2.4m right of way.

Phased Implementation

  • Phase 1 establishes temporary pedestrian footpaths providing clear metro staircase accessibility.

  • Phase 2 incorporates Multi-Utility Zones for temporary markets and local vendors, acknowledging that livelihoods are integral to street vitality.

  • Phase 3 adds seating and landscape features, creating inviting spaces for rest and engagement.

  • Phase 3 Extended scales the design to accommodate residential parking, vendors, public seating, celebrations, and landscape—demonstrating adaptability to diverse urban conditions.

An Inclusive and Safe Street

The final vision provides clear metro access, shop frontage activation, multi-utility vendor zones, safe crossings with separated two-wheeler parking, and integrated greenery—maintaining right of way while preserving activities that make Indian streets vibrant.

Urban Weave demonstrates how tactical urbanism addresses infrastructure gaps through flexibility, accommodation, and modularity—creating a replicable framework where pedestrian safety and street vitality reinforce each other.
